Biometrika documents my thoughts as I build an understanding of biological data security.
Genomic data, fingerprints, medical records are all types of biological data. The ability to share
biological data is essential for the progression of science, but this must also be balanced by the protection
of trust of those who consent to share their biological data.
I have a specific interest in protecting biological data as an organization's intellectual property. DNA is immutuable,
it cannot change therefore its risk of theft is permanent. Many Indigenous peoples have been victims of biopiracy, which
occurs when researchers claim to have discovered a unique property of a plant or animal that has long been part of Indigenous
knowledge and stewardship, without sharing credit or profits. That being said, biological data security is important for
everyone. Genomic data in labs can be hacked to synthesize harmful medicines or diseases. Companies may
use genomic data to discriminate against people by hiking insurance rates or denying employment.
The TLD of website is .fun to help myself share my thoughts more freely. The blend of biology and technology
has been a subject of science fiction and fantasy for ages. I hope to bring creative flare to my log entries
when can.
